Not much in the way of news this week, so Grant and Peter get almost straight into the topic: Diaspora, the scattering of a people from a common homeland and their desire to return. We discuss what, exactly makes a diaspora and how it can be used for world and character building.

Hi guys,
I’m a Mennonite. My church family moved to Oregon from the Midwest less than a generation ago. Prior to that we were in Canada,Russia and originally Germany. A good number still speak high German (I think, it may be Low, whichever is the older one). Nobody realm wants to go back to Russia or Germany and we are far enough removed time wise that it is just remembered in ‘legend’. However the Nebraska area is a big pull for many. There are organized trips to visit family and friends there. The church family is very tight knit and most are inter-related so they get excited when new members come in so the kids have someone to marry. Young adults are encouraged to marry in the church if there is a non-related person.
They have carried many traditions of the Mennonite ways here. Head coverings, 3 piece suits, Sundays are days of sitting in the sitting room and reading Bibles (except during harvest). The new folks (like me) have been reacting to these traditions and some have been set aside if found not biblical (head coverings, suits for church).
Many of the older folk refer to themselves as part of a voluntary dispersion. The community was becoming to related, so groups splintered off. A bit different than what y’all talked about, but another valid reason to disperse.
