We’re back with a surprisingly focused episode on sainthood thanks to Jenny’s hard work and research! We’ve only a little bit of off-topic material to discuss: A quick word about the list of questions our Patrons send in, and a brief diversion to discuss Nintendo’s Koi Koi game played with hanafuda cards. We also answer Patreon supporter Tom Stephens’s question about the one place in the world we’d go, if we could go anywhere at all.
After that’s done, it’s time for a deep dive into sainthood. After all, we’d eventually like to do a full series on individual saints and important Church figures; but we figured we’d need a primer on sainthood first, and Jenny definitely provided! Her research covers what a ‘saint’ is, how one becomes a canonized saint in the Roman Catholic church, and much more. We also discuss the use of saints as a concept for games and worldbuilding.
Resources: The Anglican Communion’s Lambeth Conference documents; other Anglican liturgical texts; and STG 107, “Relics and Holy Items”. Plus, the Friends at the Table podcast Jenny mentioned!
Scripture: Psalm 16:1-3, Romans 8:26-30, Revelation 5:6-8 (all NASB this time)

Now I need to come up with another question. :-)
Southern Sweden is very beautiful. I’ve been to Stockholm twice and once to Uppsala but never to Malmö. Jenny would definitely enjoy a visit there.
I’ve definitely been to the Rockies, I live in Utah. They are right outside my window. In fact, I’ve stood and taken pictures on top of the bluff where the picture Peter used for the banner image on his Setting Design Report #17 post was taken. I have nearly that same picture but not with all those wonderful colors.
The Orient is on my todo list as well. I travel a lot for work related conferences (NASA & astronomy) but I’ve never managed to get to Japan or China (or the southern hemisphere). I’ve always managed to switch jobs/responsibilities just before a trip to that part of the planet would come up. It’s happened 3-4 times now. Some day.
I think right now the place I’d like to visit is Australia. Although I’d settle for just about anywhere south of the equator. As an astronomer, I’d really like a chance to see the southern sky in person. My wife (also an astronomer) has been to Chile several times including going there to observe and my oldest daughter has been to Australia and I’ll admit I’m a little jealous. I almost made it down to Chile last October for a conference but changed jobs once again.
On the topic of the podcast, while I’m not Catholic (I’m LDS), one item that I thought for sure you’d mention, mainly because it’s kind of a fun fact was the origin of the term “devil’s advocate” since it is directly related to the process of canonizing a saint. The “devil’s advocate” was a member of the group looking into the background of the proposed saint whose specific role was to look for character flaws and reasons not to canonize them. To present the “other” side of the story.
Great episode and I look forward to later ones in this series along with all your other great topics.
